The U.S. FDA announced this week that it deployed a generative AI tool called ELSA, now in use by staff across the agency, several weeks ahead of its original schedule.
Elsa’s launch also came on the heels of Trump’s 2026 budget proposal (PDF), which recommends cutting the FDA’s budget by 4%, including the cutting of 1,940 staff salaries.
It said Elsa is a large language model-powered AI tool built within a “high-security GovCloud environment.” The FDA said the tool will assist with reading, writing and summarizing information.
